CHAMPAIGN — Oberweis Dairy, based in North Aurora, plans to open a store in the former Atlanta Bread Company location on South Neil Street next summer, company CEO Joe Oberweis said Wednesday.
While Oberweis’ home-delivery business already includes Champaign-Urbana, the South Neil Street shop will be its first foray into downstate Illinois.
“We have stores in St. Louis and Detroit,” he said. “But downstate, we have only the location in Champaign and another one that we’re working on opening in Bloomington as well.”
The business will include Oberweis dairy and ice cream products and will also have a That Burger Joint hamburger restaurant, Oberweis said.
“We have four locations that have the Burger Joint attached,” he said. They are all in the Chicago suburbs: Bolingbrook, Skokie, Naperville and Glen Ellyn.
Oberweis received his undergraduate degree in business at the University of Illinois.
“So did my father, my mother, my brother and my sister,” he said.
Oberweis’ father is state Sen. Jim Oberweis, R-Aurora, who has been a candidate for governor and the U.S. Senate.
Just what C-U needs... yet another overpriced hamburger joint.
All we ever seem to get are banks and restaurants.
Just out of curiosity, what would you like to see come to Champaign? I'm not trying to be snippy, just wondering :) I wouldn't mind a good comedy club that draws in talent every weekend, not just the occasional Virginia Theatre performance.
what would I like to see come to CU?
HyVee
Trader Joes
Whirlyball
Whirlyball would be fun, as would a go-kart track.
I certainly don't mind new restaurants, though. Options are good.
why do so many resturants open in champaign.Maybe people there dont know how to cook for themselves? there are only a couple that i give my money too and they are owner operated stores.never a big corprate place.
This is exciting!
