Champaign man accused of trying to set house on fire

URBANA — A Champaign man who allegedly tried to set a home on fire is being held at the Champaign County Jail on $50,000 bond.

Tommy Lee Brown, 66, who listed an address in the 500 block of East Beardsley, was charged on Thursday with attempted aggravated arson, a Class 1 felony.

Brown is due back in court on June 6.

Judge Brett Olmstead ordered Brown to have no contact with the victim, to get a risk assessment evaluation due to his history of domestic violence.

If Brown is released from jail, Olmstead ordered Brown to wear a electronic GPS monitoring bracelet.

According to a police report, Brown poured gasoline on the porch and outside the home of a woman in the 500 block of East Beardsley on May 17.

Police said the victim wants to move back to Memphis, a desire that led to an argument between Brown and the woman.

During the argument Brown got out a gasoline can and poured some gas on the porch and further outside the home.

Brown allegedly tried to light the gasoline, but he was unsuccessful.

Police said Brown's actions were witnessed by an adult. There were three children in the house.
