The late, great Dave Shaul helped introduce "Illini Night" at the Tom Jones Challenger League, which allows children facing physical and mental challenges the opportunity to play baseball.

"He'd always get a thrill out of it when all the coaches would come out," said Brian Barnhart, voice of the Illini and also a Challenger League coach. "It was a team effort, but he did a lot to make it happen."

Tonight at Urbana's AMBUCS Park, UI football coach Lovie Smith and athletic director Josh Whitman will headline this year's "Illini Night." First pitch is at 5:50 p.m., and the public is encouraged to attend.

Shaul, who died May 22, was big into all things Challenger League. In the league's first games after his death, his initials were chalked behind home plate.

Plans to honor Shaul include planting a tree in his name at AMBUCS Park.
