Lou & Loren: The podcast

How does Lou Henson want to be remembered?

"Just as a pretty good basketball coach and a nice guy," the 85-year-old Hall of Fame coach told longtime friend Loren Tate during a recent 30-minute conversation that kicks off a podcast project of ours.

Lou on ...

— The gumption it took to call Bob Knight a "classic bully" during a postgame run-in after the Illini beat Indiana: "I had two big policemen on both sides of me."

— Why he retired as UI coach in 1996: "We just couldn't recruit."

— His reception when he took the UI job in 1975: "The top coaches in the state, they wanted a high school coach to take this job. When I came in, they were mad. Everybody all over the state was mad."

— His decision to stick with the Illini: "I didn't get any big offers." He was contacted by the Houston Rockets at one point, but turned them down. "It wouldn't make any difference because I was going to stay at Illinois."
