Man found dead, hanging from door in Covenant emergency department

URBANA — Local authorities are investigating the death of a man who was found hanging from a bedsheet in the Presence Covenant emergency department.

The victim, a 38-year-old man, was pronounced dead in the hospital's emergency department at 12:12 p.m. Saturday, according to Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup.

The man was in one of the emergency department patient rooms and was found hanging from a door, Northrup said.

"Of course, they got him down and attempted to revive him before we were notified," he said.

An autopsy was conducted Monday, Northrup said.

Urbana police Lt. Rich Surles said the death is being investigated as a suicide.

Presence Health Regional President and CEO Dr. Jared Rogers directed questions to Urbana police.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the patient's family," he said. "And we are fully cooperating with the police investigation."

Suicide in an ER; does this strike anyone besides me as unusual?

I would say it likely could have been prevented; I would guess that the proper precautions or protocol weren't being followed. I don't know exactly what they are supposed to do, but if he wasnt being monitored correctly or restrained due to being admitted under sucide watch then it could very easily happen.
