CHAMPAIGN — Workers began taking down the large AT&T tower on Clark Street between Randolph and Neil streets Tuesday in Champaign.

AT&T no longer uses the tower and decided to take it down after being asked to by Mayor Deb Feinen, according to AT&T spokesman Eric Robinson.

"We were no longer using that tower facility in Champaign, and the mayor asked if we would consider taking it down," Robinson said in an email. "In this case, we were able to do that, and we started that process today."

Feinen praised the move in a tweet Tuesday afternoon.

"Huge shout out to AT&T who listened and are taking down their tower today," Feinen tweeted.

Workers from Helmkamp Construction, East Alton, used cranes Tuesday to begin taking the tower down.

AT&T needs to add a cell tower in the Kirby Ave/Duncan Rd area.  The cell reception is terrible.  Dropped calls, poor data reception.

So Mayor Giggles gets all upset over a tower that NO ONE cared about, but SW champaign is under seige from burglaries to cars and this is what is  worried  about?

I guess you think people can only do one thing at a time? After the city council meeting should she drive around there and lock everyone's doors for them? Door locks are there for a reason people!

So blame the victim is ok?  Maybe they just shouldn't have nice things, then the envy wouldnt motivate the criminals...

Just tell your neighbors to excercise some common sense and lock the doors of their car. I would much rather our police spend time policing real crimes, not teenagers walking around at night and testing unlocked cars.

Today's teen petty criminals are tomorrow's felons.  Once you perpetuate the notion, that what you want can become yours without consequence or cost, society is lost.  I would agree with you about policing real crime if we were tallking about seatbelt checks and other crap taxation.  But petty theft is a gateway crime.

A lot of teens do petty stuff and grow out of it, go on to do good things. They don't go on to become felons. Stealing change out of an unlocked car is not the same as robbing a bank with a weapon. I've been robbed by someone with a knife, I know what it's like.

Poeple need to take responsibility for their property. Lock their doors and windows instead of expecting everyone else to be responsible for it. By making it so easy for theft to occur everyone's insurance rates go up. By not looking out for their neighbors, by posting online when they see something instead of calling the police so they can handle it. wrote on August 09, 2017 at 8:08 am

For starters.. SW Champaign has 1.5 officers per shift to patrol an area from Prospect to Rising  University to Curtis.

Over 20000 residents..................

maybe hire some more  police officers rather than annexing everything to the horizon.

That would be a start for mayor giggles.

Your constant referral to the Mayor as mayor giggles is old, tiresome, disrespectful and pretty much points you out as a person with little or no real content to contribute.  Might be time to grow up a bit although I suspect that ship has sailed. wrote on August 12, 2017 at 11:08 am

Watch the Council meetings.  She giggles.. alot.

But back to the tower....

rsp wrote on August 10, 2017 at 4:08 pm

I'm so used to seeing it there but I doubt they were going to maintain it. At some point it could become a hazard. It's nice they are being so responsive.

Champaign is not a very good city anyway. Only Mrs Giggles the mayor complains about a tower. The tower wasn't hurting anyone or anybody. They should have just left it alone. I am glad I left Champaign for a better city, Colorado Springs which is where I am from and living now. Yes, I have heard about what has been going on in Illinois with the budget crisis and Illinois's  credit status rated JUNK. That mayor is so worried about a tower that she forgets about all them shootings and crime in Southwest Champaign now.

Not only does your opinion not really matter anymore, you really don't get anything and are very out of touch with what's going on.  She asked if they could take the tower down, and they said yes.  You act as if she spent thousands of city dollars and has been ignoring everything else.
