Tom Kacich: Readers chime in with 'war chant' replacements

Wednesday's column, which discussed the roots of the University of Illinois' now-retired 'war chant' in the theme song from the 1950s children's cartoon "Adventures of Pow Wow," also put out a call for suggestions for replacements.

And you delivered.

The following is a list with samples of the tunes/theme songs that readers have suggested as replacements for the Marching Illini to play during crucial situations, such as a goal-line stand on defense or a 3rd and 2 yards to go on offense. Listen for yourself and see what you think.

In no particular order:

  • The theme from "Mighty Mouse," a cartoon shown in theaters in the 1940s and '50s and on CBS' Saturday morning cartoon block from 1955-67:

  • The theme from the 1960 film "The Magnificent Seven":

  • The theme from "Rawhide," the CBS series that ran from 1959-65:

  • The theme from "Bonanza," the NBC series that ran from 1959-73:

  • The theme from "The Untouchables," the ABC series that ran from 1959-63:

  • The theme from "ABC's Wide World of Sports," which ran from 1961-98 (the sample is from the early '80s):

  • The theme from "Jonny Quest," a cartoon that ran on ABC in 1964-65 and on the other two major networks over the next 20 years:

  • One astute reader must have noticed some similarities in this Hamm's beer jingle from the 1950s:

  • The theme from "Underdog," a cartoon that ran on NBC from 1964-73:

  • The "See the U.S.A. in Your Chevrolet" jingle, as sung by Dinah Shore:

  • The theme from "Atom Ant," part of "The Atom Ant/Secret Squirrel Show" that ran on NBC from 1965-67:

  • The theme from "Winky Dink and You," the CBS children's series that ran from 1953-57:

  • And the best tongue-in-cheek suggestion: The theme from Disney's "It's a Small World" attraction, with a note from the reader: "I HATE THE DARN SONG IT DRIVES ME CRAZY, so maybe it would do the same for the opposing team. But more importantly, everyone would feel welcome and comfortable (except me; I hate that darn song!)":

++! The Hamm's beer jingle!!  Should drive the "cultural appropriater" alt-left communists crazy with the same rhythm, not to mention the mascot being a beer swilling bear.

Well, at least you're acknowledging that causing offense is what motivates you to advocate the use of fake Indian music...

In the 1970s, Dom's Patio Villa restaurant in Champaign had a Hamm's Beer clock on the wall. Whenever I would see the clock, I would always think of the commercial and the drum beat.
