Neighbor: Targets of KKK flyer hoax have moved out of house

CHAMPAIGN — The occupants of a northwest Champaign home at the center of what authorities described as a cruel hoax have moved out, a neighbor said Wednesday.

The family that lived in the cream-colored house on North Willis Avenue received threats in the wake of locally distributed flyers purporting to invite people to a Ku Klux Klan meeting at their address last Friday night.

A next-door neighbor, Leeann Rutledge, said the occupants moved out within the past few days, leaving behind a tattered couch sitting beside a recycling bin, in addition to a pool of broken glass on the front door step.

The flyers were circulated in predominantly black neighborhoods, Champaign Police Chief Anthony Cobb said. That sparked a firestorm on social media and led to an investigation that Cobb categorized as ongoing in his address to the Champaign Community Coalition on Wednesday.

In a little over 25 years of working in local law enforcement, Cobb said he's never come across a case like this. Longtime NAACP leader Patricia Avery said it merits further discussion, no matter how the investigation turns out.

"That's probably a town hall conversation we need to have — about how do we deal with these pranks and how it impacts people," she said. "People are on edge and feeling anxious."

"Klu Klux Klan"?   These "Klukers" need some spelling lessons!

JamBam wrote on September 14, 2017 at 9:09 am

It was probably the BLM or ANTIFA agitators that were responsible in stoking the race hustle.  None of them are bright enough to spell correctly either.

APC wrote on September 14, 2017 at 10:09 am

I personally blame followers of the flying spaghetti monster - they can be a rowdy bunch.

See how easy it is to make completely unsupported allegations without a shred of proof...

JamBam wrote on September 14, 2017 at 11:09 pm

What is a "flying spaghtetti monster"?

I would point to the group that can benefit the most as to who would perpetrate a hoax. And BLM/Antifa benefit from the race hustle. They thrive on that.  Who else does?

Oh, come on...open your eyes, sheeple...

It was clearly the work of the bigfoot-alien hybrids as part of their inter galactic war against the lizard people, trying to keep secret that the earth is flat and the moon landing was fake.

They were obviously directed to do this as part of Obama's continuing efforts to keep his real birth certificate and college transcripts secret, in conjunction of course with the RAND corporation and the Trilateral Commission/Bilderburger/Big Water triumverate --- as recently exposed by Rush Limbaugh --- and, as anyone can plainly see, it's all part of their ongoing secret alliance with the reverse vampires in a fiendish conspiracy to eliminate the meal of dinner...

Yea! JamBam, that is completely logical.

Quick! Look over your paranoid shoulder! Someone out there is out to get you! (Or... just go back to Breitbart. I'm sure they're stoking up some new paranoia for you.)

JamBam wrote on September 14, 2017 at 11:09 pm

There's no paranoia.

It's called logic. I know to all you far far leftists - you live in a word devoid of logic and immersed in your own mental illness.  But let me educate you as easily as possible.  I'll dumb it down for the perpetually aggrieved and offended such as yourself.

What group has been most vocal about claiming the "evils" of "white privilege"?  I'd say BLM and Antifa, right?  So if they want to gain membership to their group, wouldn't it make a lot of sense to try to go into a black neighborhood and pretend white people are out to get them?  This may have actually worked if they could actually spell the group's name right.  Then again, the average ACT scores of BLM/ANTIFA is probably under 16.

Since there's only about 6,000 Ku Klux Klan members in the entire United States, I would venture a guess that they would not want to be recruiting new members in a black neighorhood of Champaign IL.  Just a guess.

So who else could it have been?  Who benefits the most from trying to offend black people?  I would say BLM does.

CallSaul wrote on September 14, 2017 at 11:09 am

Leaving aside JamBam's attempt to politicize this with his weird conspiracy theories and attempts to blame his favorite ooga booga betes noires, whoever did this needs to be punished...

Annotator wrote on September 14, 2017 at 12:09 pm

What if JamBam is corret in his post?  I don't know who the family was that lived at that address, but there are many groups in C-U with motives to do such a cowardly act.  Not the least of which are BLM, antifa and various criminal gangs.

wayward wrote on September 14, 2017 at 12:09 pm

Antifa or BLM targeting a specific family that way? I doubt it. If a left-leaning group was going to perpetrate a hoax, I think they would have kept it vague enough that it was hard to disprove. As soon as you put a specific address on it, people are going to ask questions.

APC wrote on September 14, 2017 at 1:09 pm

As I said above, it probably the flying spaghetti monster mob.

I have it under the highest authority from a source who will go unnamed that some of the commentors on this very bulletin board may be in league with the dasterdly ones. In other words, the "what if" road is dark and deep...

Or you could just admit that there is 0 evidence of any organized group taking part in this (let alone your bugaboo BLM/antifa horde comin to git ya). The posts blaming a particular bunch of people are absurdity and fear mongering at their worse and merely serve to illustrate the lack of anything resembling real analysis in which many internet trolls partake in many of the subjects on which they propound.

Actually, they have no motive to do this--it doesn't further their goals in any way.

I'm guessing it was 4chan-type trolls who think this kind of thing is hilarious because they don't understand (or care) that the people they're trolling are real human beings.

wayward wrote on September 14, 2017 at 9:09 pm

I'm not so sure about that. Why would 4chan types pick that particular address and then go to the inconvenience and risk of physically distributing them around here? I'd suspect that it's personal and ideology was just a smokescreen. Someone wanted the people in that house gone.

Jen R wrote on September 15, 2017 at 11:09 am

That would also make sense. And you're right, actually doing something in the physical world is probably too much work for /pol/.

Are you guys under the impression that antifa is some sort of organized group? For months I've seen right wing creetens blaming 'antifa' for everything they would traditionally blame on minorities or the boogie man. Pretty amusing actually.

Why would any of you faux patriots claim to be anything other than antifascists? We literally fought a world war over this. The greatest patriots our country has ever seen were shipped off to their death by the hundreds of thousands to fight fascism. The only thing I can come up with is now that fascism and racism in style with the current administration, you all are feeling very confident in your own fascist/racist bubble. You are a segment of society that we decent Americans thought died off years ago, which unfortunately isn't the case.

I agree with the other folks with a brain that it is impossible to guess who might have pulled off this terrible scheme. Looks to me it was more personal than political. Leftists wouldn't have anything to gain by this and to be honest I don't think anyone on the right would be intelligent or brave enough to try this.

JamBam and Annotator should know.

For those of you who think this is some kind of joke a child was targeted. A family had to move on short notice to protect a child. I really hope that amuses you.

CallSaul wrote on September 14, 2017 at 4:09 pm

As I mentioned in another comment, whoever did this should be punished. It's reprehensible and disgusting. Potential criminal charges would seem to include some forms of harrassment, incitement, endangerment, hate crime and more.

In addition to potential criminal charges, whoever did this also opened themselves up to potential civil damages...

What is ridiculous, though not amusing, however, is that the rightwing reactionaries jumped to blaming --- with absolutely no evidence of course --- their favorite ooga booga monsters under the bed.

Though entirely predictable, their rush to cast blame with no evidence is every bit as disgusting as making and distributing the flyer...

"Though entirely predictable, their rush to cast blame with no evidence is every bit as disgusting as making and distributing the flyer..."

Not really.  Some right-wing trolls trying to blame antifa and BLM is dumb and kind of tedious, but they don't have much real impact.  In contrast, the flyers set a chain of events in motion that resulted in a family being scared enough to move out of the house they'd been living in.  Whole different ballgame.

CallSaul wrote on September 14, 2017 at 6:09 pm

I certainly agree that the immediate consequences are vastly different. The fear, stress, trouble, expense, etc this family is experiencing far outweigh the consequences of reading a few more dumb ramblings of RWNJs.

In longer and more difuse terms however, the ooga booga blaming of groups like BLM and falsely asserting that BLM is violent and even calling them terrorists also has very serious --- even deadly --- consequences.

Though the immediate consequences don't compare, in the long run and in aggregate, I really do think the act of falsly blaming BLM --- because they have the audacity to protest police killing of unarmed citizens --- is just as disgusting as distributing the flyer...

JamBam wrote on September 14, 2017 at 11:09 pm

LOL...Saul do you even read back to yourself what you write?  How many times have you been banned from this website?  What happened to your Mark Taylor name?  I want to know.

"Falsely" asserting that BLM is violent.  This is crazy even for you.  Do you suffer from collective amnesia?  What else would you call BLM when they burn down and riot in Ferguson, Baltimore, Charlotte, and then you have a couple BLM members executing cops in Dallas.

What exactly do you conjure up in your mind when you hear BLM chanting:

"What do we want"

 "Dead Cops"

When do we want it"

"Now:"

Saul, since you are such a supporter of BLM, have you followed thru with their demands. Because they have demanded that you (as a white privileged person) give your property to another black person. Because according to them, you'll more than make up for it by simply still having your white privilege. Let us all know when you make your first contribution to their cause.

CallSaul wrote on September 15, 2017 at 12:09 am

Mark Taylor...?

What have I written that you believe is somehow inconsistent with something else I've written...?

As has been demonstrated to you and the other rightwing reactionaries who rely on lying about obvious reality, BLM does not condone violence. But all you can do is sputter your evidence free assertions ad naseum...

Here's a hint even you can grasp if you try just a little bit: not all protestors are part of BLM. And they don't all know each other, either...

Try this: back up a single assertions, just one time. Provide proof to back up your ridiculous claim that BLM demands white people turn over their property to black people.

You of course can't prove such a laughable and desperate lie so instead you'll come back with more bluster and more tired reactionary ooga booga attempts at scare tactics...

Yawn...

Who is "they" Sollie?  RWNJ?

cjw61822@hotmail.com wrote on September 15, 2017 at 4:09 pm

Sollie boy

Their have been numerous demonstratons in the US in which folks who claim  ( and no id's were checked) t have been with BLM and they chanted   death to police officers etc.  Its a fact and you know its a fact.  No one is checking to their id's t see if their "membership" in BLM is valid or not.......... but as all liberals you fail to accept reality and just poo poo it.

Now your thoughts of BLM todays demonstrations in STL... should we have a star chamber for officers?  After all...you have friends and family who are cops.  You said so.....................

It's a good thing this family is being traumatized so "people" can entertain themselves in their basements. We would like to think society wouldn't treat people like this, but the fact it's "entertainment" for people so they can spout off about conspiracy theories and demean others suggest nothing much has changed.
