Man arrested for allegedly shooting woman in northwest Champaign

CHAMPAIGN — Police arrested a man for allegedly shooting a person that he complained was being loud in northwest Champaign early Saturday.

Champaign police Lt. Dave Shaffer said in a release that Alva Thomas II, 43, who listed an address in the 900 block of Pomona Drive, was arrested about 3 a.m. for allegedly firing two shots at a woman, one of which struck her.

The release said the 25-year-old victim was hit in the abdomen but that the shot was not life-threatening.

"Preliminary investigations reveal that Thomas came out of his home to confront the victim, whom he reports was being loud. An argument ensued, with Thomas firing two shots, one of which struck the victim in the abdomen," the release said.

Shaffer said Thomas remained at the scene and was cooperative with police.

The woman was taken to a hospital, and Thomas was arrested on a preliminary charge of aggravated discharge of a firearm.

He appeared in court Saturday, where a judge set his bond Saturday at $15,000. He is expected to be formally charged Monday.

That's an awfully low bond for shooting somebody.
