URBANA — Authorities have identified the victim of Saturday's fatal shooting in Danville as a 25-year-old Chicago man.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Gerald Taylor was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana at 4:29 a.m. Saturday.

A preliminary autopsy performed later that day confirmed he died from a gunshot wound.

Northrup's office and Danville police continue to investigate the homicide.

Danville police were called to the 900 block of Campbell Lane shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday after someone reported that a person had been shot, according to Public Safety Director Larry Thomason.

When officers arrived, they found a man on the ground and called for medical help. Thomason said the man was taken by Arrow Ambulance to the Urbana hospital, where he reportedly died during surgery.
