It was cold in the area, but only for a spell

Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel said it got down to 31 degrees Monday morning in Champaign-Urbana, the lowest temperature this fall. It was the first time below freezing this season.

"We are actually about two weeks late this year," he said.

No worries, Angel said: Temperatures are expected to rise to the 40s today, 50s on Wednesday and 65 on Thursday.

Angel said it's a good time to disconnect outside water hoses. If you don't, the water that remains within will freeze and almost definitely cause the lining to crack. Ice can also put pressure on the pipes connected to your house and, as a result, your home's entire plumbing system.

"If you have a rain gauge, you might want to bring it inside," Angel said.
