Group of shoplifters rush store, steal coats

CHAMPAIGN — Bold shoplifters apparently working as a team made off with an undetermined amount of men's coats from a Champaign store Friday evening.

Champaign police Sgt. Jaceson Yandell said police were called to Champaign Surplus, 303 S. Neil St., about 6:43 p.m.

Shortly before that, Yandell said, an employee reported that a young man came in, looked around and asked for a particular type of clothing. The employee said he left the store but returned shortly after with about seven other males wearing what were described as military-style jackets with patches.

"They converge on a rack of clothing, start loading up garbage bags and head out the door," Yandell said.

The group was last seen running north from the store.

Yandell said the preliminary report about the bizarre theft did not have an estimate of the coats' value.

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to call Champaign police at 217-351-4545.

Callers who want to remain anonymous and possibly collect a reward may contact Crime Stoppers at 217-373-TIPS, 373tips.com, or through a free app for smart phones called P3 Tips.

If you are not going to give a description of the subjects, then why even print this story?  How is it useful to the public?

What race were the subjects?  How old were they?  What kind of jackets did they steal?  You know, helpful information if you really want the public to help the police.  Is it really that difficult?  If you do not have these details, then don't even print the story.  It's useless.

JamBam,

It goes without saying that there are several important reasons why this story was published that do not satisfy your requests, not the least of which is that it serves as the best confirmed information of what exactly happened for people who saw or heard about the heightened police presence in the area or those who work and shop at that store, among many others. It is our job to inform as soon as we can verify the information, and this is the extent of what police could confirm at the time.

You now have an answer for your questions. Further inquires from you that can be answered in the same way will be deleted.

Have a nice day.

Sincerely,

Mr. Dugan-

I think the frustration you see in comments like this are two-fold.  First of all, it is pretty troubling the News-Gazette has accepted the notion of prior restraint when reporting the news. Full descriptions of suspects are often not included or updated.  This is akin to not reporting the score of an Illini football game in a sports story.  Secondly, what if the case is the descriptions of the suspects isn't just part of the story - it IS the story.  And yes, I'm making this statement without yet knowing who committed this crime.  But the public will never know since these facts are withheld and not reported.

So let me get this straight.

The reporter went and spoke to Sgt. Yandell who had a copy of the dispatch ticket/police report handy when they talked to the reporter, but the reporter FAILED to ask who the suspects were...... is that what your telling us?????????????

Or is it that you do not want to get folks angry with the discription of the suspects some 3 days later,....

and folks wonder why there is such low regard for the media.

In the mean time CPD publishes a list of every report taken every day.

unfiltered.

unbiased.

For anyone wondering about the obsession with 'descriptions' of suspects, look at the comment history of those who ceaselessly whine when they don't get the information they say they 'need.'

Their comment histories are strewn with prejudiced and bigoted comments.

They simply hope to confirm their prejudices and biases about black people supposedly being 'prone to crime.'

That's all it is --- simple, and simple minded, bigotry and racism.

They just gotta have their daily fix.

Now watch them wail and whine and screech about being 'unfairly' called out...

cjw61822@hotmail.com wrote on November 09, 2017 at 1:11 pm

Huh?

Thats a new stupid even for you.   They ask for information as to the suspects.  Gotta have a suspect discription to call crime stoppers

and your friends and family who are cops ( you have said so in the past) if they think that victims of crime should tell the police  who did it or if the police should report suspect discriptions

But for you SJW  truth is hard to comprehend isnt it.  Read the CPD logs for suspect information.  Should a victim of a crime just say.......................................... human when asked to discribe the suspects that just attacked them?  But soldier on SWJ

Under your logic the store shouldnt have called for they risk offending the SWJ of the community.  You gonna replace the 1000 worth of coats that were taken there Jimmy?

CallSaul wrote on November 09, 2017 at 1:11 pm

While fooling yourself is obviouslly a trivial matter, understand that you're not fooling anyone else...

And...uh...who's this Jimmy you seem to be having long, convoluted shouting matches with inside your head...?

cjw61822@hotmail.com wrote on November 09, 2017 at 2:11 pm

Huh?

As usual that makes no sense.

Ill let you figure out who Jimmy McGill is...

hint

he becomes a drug dealers friend.................

quite the person who you seem to emulate.

sad.

CallSaul wrote on November 09, 2017 at 2:11 pm

So next I guess you'll be accusing me of credit card fraud, money laundering and...well...a whole bunch of other things...?

Hookay, then...

The only thing sadder than your and your fellow rightwing trolls' delusions that you're covering up the obvious reasons for your mania to have the race of suspects highlighted is the fact that you cling so bitterly to the sick racism that everyone knows underlies that mania.

As the recent election results in VA and across the country show, more and more people are disgusted by and vehemently rejecting your racism and bigotry.

11/2018 is coming at ya fast...and then we'll move on to 11/2020...

Did the article say there were seven?  Ok.  I have this.  Probation.  Probation.  Probation.  Probation.  Probation.  Probation.  And wait for it.........Probation.

It is clear as a community we have to do a much better job advertizing where free coats are available.  There are so many options in this county.  Bergners just had a coat collection, as do many of the churches. So why steal when places want to help people keep warm during cold weather?  :-)

Berto71 wrote on November 05, 2017 at 2:11 am

These guys were not interested in keeping warm. They were interested in steeling as much as they could carry for re-sale.

cjw61822@hotmail.com wrote on November 05, 2017 at 4:11 pm

You are funny Pattsi.  Maybe you need to run for office.  Thieves are thieves.  It is in their DNA.  In this case when the NG finally gets around to publishing the suspects discription, you will find that it is an all too common discription.  Hint........... they aint from St Joe.

Here is the updated CPD report,  CPD has no problem giving a description odf the suspects.

So if there was a serial rapist preying on women  you would be ok with no releasing the suspect information due to your perceived thoughts would be racist in some way?

sad.
