CHAMPAIGN — Members hoping to get in a workout Friday morning were in for an unpleasant surprise when they arrived at Charter Fitness: the sight of treadmills, elliptical machines, barbells and other assorted of exercise equipment being hauled into five large moving trucks.

Charter Fitness' Champaign location closed without warning Friday morning. Taron Hayn, general manager of the gym at 2414 Galen Drive, broke the news to customers in the parking lot throughout Friday morning.

Hayn said the company is "actively looking for another location right now" in Champaign but in the meantime, plans are to merge with the Urbana location, inside Lincoln Square.

For those who want to keep their memberships, Charter of Urbana offers the same $10-a-month "basic" plan that Charter of Champaign did.

"Everything you'll find in Champaign, you'll find in Urbana," Hayn said.

The move leaves Galen Drive without a gym for the first time in 40 years. Just a block away from where Charter was, at 2508 Galen, the Fitness Center operated from 1976 to 2013.
