Champaign County auditor appointed to fill in for retiring treasurer

URBANA — Champaign County Auditor John Farney will be switching offices and job titles at the Brookens Center at the end of the year.

Republican precinct committeemen from Champaign County voted Monday night to select Farney as county treasurer beginning Jan. 1.

Farney takes the place of longtime county Treasurer Dan Welch, who is retiring after 44 years in county government, the last 19 as elected treasurer. He will serve out the remainder of Welch's term, which ends Nov. 30, 2018. He has also announced he is a candidate for the office beyond 2018.

Farney grew up in Homer and Philo and graduated from Unity High School. He has degrees from Parkland College and Eastern Illinois University.

"It is humbling to receive the support and trust of these community leaders as their choice to be county treasurer," Farney said. "I look forward to the challenges that will be facing Champaign County, and will offer a steady hand to guide us through the coming months and years."

He and his wife, Stephanie, live in rural Urbana with their son, Nathaniel.
