UPDATE: Fire destroys large house north of Danville; no one hurt (w/video)

DANVILLE — Several Vermilion County fire departments battled a large blaze Thursday evening at an upscale home just north of Danville.

The fire started shortly before 4 p.m. at 17168 Clinton Road, a dead-end residential road off Shake Rag Road on Danville’s north end, but outside the city in the Bismarck Fire Protection District.

The home is owned by local businessman Al Abbed; no one was at home at the time of the fire.

Bismarck Assistant Fire Chief Jake Wright said when his crews got on the scene, the fire was mostly in the attic of the about-6,000-square-foot house. He said within 10 to 15 minutes, it broke through the roof, and crews had to leave the house for safety. From there, it engulfed a large portion of the house, and a large plume of smoke could be seen rising high into the sky during the last half-hour of daylight.

Volunteer firefighters and tanker trucks from Bismarck, Bluegrass, Lynch, Kickapoo, Rossville and Westville fire departments all descended on the scene. Wright said about 50 firefighters were there battling the blaze.

They were still on the scene actively fighting the fire after 9:30 p.m. Thursday. Wright said they called in an excavator that was leveling the house, so firefighters could get to the flames at the center of the structure. He said the house will be a total loss.

He said the cause is unknown at this time, and they will be investigating with assistance from the state fire marshal’s office.
