Danville High cancels more games in wake of Central shooting

DANVILLE — Danville schools Superintendent Alicia Geddis announced Tuesday that two more high school basketball games, this time against Urbana, are being postponed in the wake of the shooting after last Friday's boys game at Champaign Central High School.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we have jointly decided to cancel Tuesday's Champaign Central-Danville girls basketball as well as Friday night's Urbana-Danville boys game and Saturday's Danville-Urbana girls game," Geddis said in a prepared statement. "Law enforcement is continuing to investigate the violence that occurred last weekend. The safety of our students, staff and fans is our top priority."

Geddis said school officials will make decisions about future games in consultation with law enforcement.

Danville Public Safety Director Larry Thomason said school officials consulted with police about holding this weekend's home game against Urbana.

"We had discussions in regards to the incident that took place," he said, adding the decision ultimately fell with the superintendent.

Thomason said he fully supports the decision to postpone the games "to give a cooling off period in case there are any indicators that someone might want to do anything inappropriate."

He said no games beyond this coming weekend were discussed.
