UPDATE: Details on Urbana man's death at rural intersection

URBANA — A rural Urbana man died Friday after a two-vehicle crash southeast of Urbana in St. Joseph Township.

Champaign County sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Vercler said William S. Moser, 50, apparently failed to yield at an intersection not far from his own home and collided with a van that entered at the same time. The van driver did not have a stop or yield sign.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said he is waiting on the result
of tests before establishing a cause of death for Mr. Moser.

Sheriff's deputies administered life-saving techniques until emergency workers could get there but Mr. Moser was pronounced dead at Carle Hospital within an hour of the collision, which was reported at 4:07 p.m.

Vercler said Mr. Moser was driving a Buick Lucerne south on County Road 1900 E and was approaching 1250 N. He had a yield sign and failed to heed it and was hit in the passenger side by a Toyota van driven by Terry Thompson, 44, of rural St. Joseph. She was eastbound.

The intersection is three miles east of Illinois 130 and between Windsor and Old Church roads.

Vercler said the impact of the collision sent Mr. Moser's car into a field southeast of the intersection and Thompson's van collided with a utility pole on the southeast corner.

The air bags in the car and van deployed. Both are considered a total loss.

Thompson was wearing a seat belt and was not seriously injured but was also taken to Carle Hospital. Mr. Moser was not wearing a seat belt. Both drivers remained in their vehicles after the crash.

Mr. Moser is the son of former Champaign County board member Steve Moser, who farms in that area with his wife, Nancy.
