Champaign caretaker accused of molesting child

URBANA — A Champaign woman accused of sexual misconduct with a child is due back in court Jan. 23 after being arraigned Thursday on criminal charges.

Rajarajeswari Swarna, 35, who listed an address in the 900 block of Waterview Way, was arrested Wednesday afternoon on a warrant that had been issued by a judge last week.

She was charged with predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and aggravated criminal sexual abuse. State’s Attorney Julia Rietz said the charges allege sex acts that happened with a child under the age of 13 in March 2017.

Rietz said not long after the alleged contact by Swarna, who was in a caretaker position, the child told a relative what happened, and Champaign police began investigating.

Rietz said the child was interviewed at the Children’s Advocacy Center and told the forensic interviewer the same basic allegations that had been reported to the relative.

Last week, Judge John Kennedy set bond on Swarna’s warrant at $150,000. If convicted of the more-serious Class X felony charge of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, Swarna faces six to 60 years in prison.
