Top of the Morning, Jan. 13, 2018

On Saturdays, we'll introduce additions to the growing newsroom at News-Gazette Media. Today: LYNDSAY JONES, our new education beat writer.

Turns out this isn't Jones' first newspaper job.

She was 8 when she got started, inspired by her reporter of an American Girl doll named Kit Kittredge.

"I made a family newspaper by hand," Jones said. Front-page news included "updates on our cat and things like that. My parents looked at it, but I'm not sure they subscribed."

Nonetheless, she was hooked.

"I never stopped wanting to do this," she said. "I've always liked to write."

Growing up in Lafayette, Ind., she combed the Journal & Courier "for spelling errors." She continued her pursuit of journalism in college, not as a Boilermaker but at rival Indiana, where she graduated in December.

"I never wanted to go to Purdue," she said. "I wanted to at least get out of my backyard."

Even if it meant attending Indiana?

"Their football team is a joke and their basketball team had all sorts of issues when I was there," she said. "I would root for IU, but I need a reason."

Jones takes over one of our most important — and engaging — beats. You'll see more of her bylines in these pages and at news-gazette.com — and hear more from her on WDWS 1400-AM — as she settles in.

"I liked Bloomington because of its diversity of bars and restaurants, and here it's the same way," she said. "There's culture."Reach Jim Rossow via email at jrossow@news-gazette.com
