Urbana man gets probation for groping woman as she slept

URBANA — A 68-year-old Urbana man who admitted groping a woman's breast as she slept has been sentenced to two years of probation.

Robert Palmer, who was staying on Carroll Avenue in Urbana with the victim last month, pleaded guilty Tuesday to criminal sexual abuse, a Class 4 felony.

He admitted that on Dec. 2, he touched the woman's breast while she was sleeping and unable to consent.

Assistant State's Attorney Troy Lozar said the 31-year-old woman was letting Palmer stay in her home. On that day, she was asleep in her room and was awakened by Palmer standing over her touching her breast.

She screamed and called police.

Lozar said Palmer told police he thought his conduct was OK because he said the woman owed him money.

Judge Tom Difanis, who accepted the guilty plea, ordered Palmer to obtain a sex-offender evaluation and to have no contact with the victim.

Lozar said Palmer had prior convictions for driving under revocation and delivery of cannabis.
