Weekend Planner: Prognosis: Cuddly

Weekend Planner: Prognosis: Cuddly

Boys and girls can bring their favorite stuffed animals to the Champaign Public Library today to get a checkup, courtesy of a bunch of University of Illinois veterinary students.

It's all part of the free Teddy Bear Hospital at 3 p.m. at the library, located at 200 W. Green St. Here's more, via staff writer Tim Mitchell:

Children's Services Librarian KATRINA POLLITT, who organized the event, said 18 members of the University of Illinois Veterinary Student Outreach Program have volunteered to give physical exams to the stuffed animals.

The experience begins when the children bring their critter to the reception area to check in.

Dressed in lab coats, the vet students will give the animal a checkup. They will demonstrate scrubbing the patient and put on medical caps, masks and shoe booties.

After completing gowning and gloving, the vet students will hook up the toy to an anesthesia machine. Then they will demonstrate bandaging. The students will write out a treatment plan for the animal on a realistic looking prescription sheet. Finally, they will hand out stickers and lollipops to the kids.

UI Veterinary Student Outreach Program President Victoria McLean said the event is a fun way to introduce children to veterinary science careers. This is the first time the event has been held at the Champaign library.
