Weekend Planner: Feline launches hostile takeover

A fairy tale comes to life this weekend as the Champaign Urbana Junior Woman's Club presents "Puss in Boots," adapted and dramatized from CHARLES PERRAULT's original story by VERA MORRIS. The latest edition of the club's Tom Thumb Theatre will be presented at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. today and 1 p.m. Sunday at the Aldridge Auditorium at Centennial High School, 913 S. Crescent Drive, C. Tickets are $8 at the door. Here's more via staff writer Tim Mitchell:

The play is about a guy named Tom (played by SUE STUNDAHL) who inherits a cat. The feline (played by LAURIE JOHNSON) wants to make Tom a marquis in order to win over the princess. Hilarity ensues as the pair prepare to take over the castle.

This marks the 64th year the club has presented the Tom Thumb Theatre. The Junior Woman's Club originally began putting on shows — in members' garages — for area kids, club spokeswoman HEATHER ZIKE said.

"Our musicals are short in length, always include audience participation and are a great way to introduce young kids to theater," Zike said.

Ticket sales raise money for the club's charitable work. "We give books to every second-grader in the public schools," Zike said. "We offer scholarships to graduating girls in the community. We also offer grants to nonprofit organizations."
