UPDATE: Coroners ID victims in fatal Illinois 1 collision near Hoopeston

UPDATE, 11 a.m. Thursday

HOOPESTON -- Officials have released the names of two people who were killed in a fatal collision in northern Vermilion County on Wednesday evening.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Denise L. Ried, 59, of Wellington, was pronounced dead at 8:16 p.m. Wednesday at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

The other victim was Warren W. Harms, 52, of Hoopeston, according to Vermilion County Coroner Jane McFadden, who released his name this morning. Mr. Harms died at the scene.

Illinois State Police and both coroners' offices are still investigating the head-on collision that occrred about 6:30 p.m. on Illinois 1 between Rossville and Hoopeston.

Police said Mr. Harms' Ford Ranger pickup truck reportedly attempted to pass a vehicle on the state highway near 3870 North Road when it collided head-on with a Chrysler minivan, driven by Mrs. Ried.

 

UPDATE, 10:50 p.m.:

HOOPESTON — A head-on collision Wednesday evening in northern Vermilion County killed both of the drivers involved.

An Illinois State Police report said the crash occurred at 6:21 p.m. Wednesday on Illinois 1 at County Road 3870 N, about halfway between Hoopeston and Rossville. A preliminary investigation revealed that a 52-year-old man was driving a pickup truck north on Illinois 1 when he crossed the center line for an unknown reason and struck a minivan being driven by a 59-year-old woman in the southbound lanes.

Police said the man driving the truck was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman driving the minivan was airlifted to an area hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. 

The names of the drivers are being withheld pending the notification of family members. It is unknown whether either driver was wearing a seat belt. Police said the crash remains under investigation.

HOOPESTON — One person was killed and another seriously injured in a head-on collision Wednesday night on Illinois 1 in Vermilion County.

Illinois State Trooper Tracy Lillard said at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, troopers were en route to the fatal two-vehicle collision on Illinois 1 at County Road 3870 N, about halfway between Hoopeston and Rossville.

She said one person is dead and another has been airlifted to an area hospital. Vermilion County police, EMS and fire department officials are on scene, and the road is closed.
