UPDATE: Death on I-74 was a suicide, coroner says

UPDATE, noon:

TILTON — The Vermilion County Coroner said a woman who was found dead in a car Monday on Interstate 74 died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Jane McFadden said the 21-year-old Bradley University student from Crystal Lake was pronounced dead at 5:35 p.m. Monday.

McFadden said the woman's car was parked in the passing lane on I-74 at mile marker 213, just west of the G Street exit. McFadden declined to release her name.

Four miles of the interstate surrounding the scene were closed for a little less than two hours Monday night as police investigated.

TILTON — State police spent Monday night investigating a death on Interstate 74 in Tilton.

State Trooper Tracy Lillard said that an individual was found dead Monday in the eastbound lanes of I-74 at milepost 213.5, about a half-mile west of the G Street exit.

State police crime-scene investigators were contacted to look into the death, Lillard said.

No other information was immediately available.
