Champaign man faces sex-assault charges in incident at campsite

URBANA — A Champaign man is due back in court later this month after being charged in a sexual assault that allegedly happened last fall.

Jacob Waller, 28, of the 800 block of Bellepark Drive was arrested Saturday on a warrant that had been issued earlier in the week charging him with criminal sexual assault and criminal sexual abuse.

Champaign County sheriff's Lt. Curt Apperson said the charges stemmed from an incident that allegedly occurred Sept. 30 at a campsite at the Sadorus Sportman Club in rural Sadorus.

Apperson said Waller was camping with two women and a boy and allegedly entered the tent of one of the women after they had been drinking around a campfire.

The woman alleged that Waller inappropriately touched her after she had fallen asleep. She brought the matter to the attention of the sheriff's office in early November. Detectives talked to her and Waller within days but it wasn't until last week that the state's attorney's office sought a warrant for his arrest.

Waller appeared in arraignment court Monday with Urbana attorney Tony Bruno. He was told to have no contact with the woman and was released from custody after posting a $10,000 cash bond.

If convicted of the more serious of the charges, Waller faces a mandatory prison term of between four and 15 years.

Waller was told to be back in court Feb. 21 for a probable-cause hearing.
