UPDATE: Danville man being held on murder, arson charges in house fire

UPDATE, 6:30 p.m.:

DANVILLE — A 19-year-old Danville man is being held on preliminary charges of murder and arson in connection with a Wednesday-morning fire at a house in north Danville where firefighters discovered a body.

Public Safety Director Larry Thomason said the man, who was detained Wednesday afternoon, is being held at the Public Safety Building, but he's not releasing his name ahead of a pending arraignment on formal charges in Vermilion County Circuit Court.

The Danville Fire Department responded at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday to a call of smoke coming from a residence in the 3600 block of Bayview Drive, an upscale subdivision on the city’s north end bordering the east side of Lake Vermilion.

Thomason said firefighters got the call from a neighbor who saw smoke, and when they arrived at the residence — a two-story brick house — there was smoke visible. After getting inside and knocking down the fire in a lower room, they discovered the body of a man inside the house.

Thomason said at this point, it immediately became a police investigation, and later in the day, he released a statement that police had the 19-year-old in custody as a "person of interest."

DANVILLE — A Wednesday-morning fire call in an upscale subdivision on the north side of Danville has turned into a police investigation involving a fatality, according to police.

The Danville fire department responded around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday to a call of smoke coming from a residence in the 3600 block of Bayview in Danville, according to Public Safety Director Larry Thomason.

Thomason said a neighbor in the subdivision that’s along Lake Vermilion called in the fire, and there was smoke visible from the outside when the firefighters arrived.

He said the fire was in a single, lower room of the house. Once firefighters had it contained, they discovered a body of a deceased male. Thomason wouldn’t disclose where the body was found other than the person was found inside the house.

Thomason said he immediately ordered a police investigation into the death but would not disclose any other information at this time.

At 1 p.m., yellow crime-scene tape was surrounding the house with a Danville fire truck, police truck and several police vehicles in the vicinity.
