Urbana police investigating shooting that left one injured

URBANA — Police are investigating a shooting in Thursday afternoon in northeast Urbana that has left a 20-year-old Champaign man in critical condition.

A release from Lt. Rich Surles said about 1 p.m., officers were sent to a shooting scene in the 1000 block of North Cunningham Avenue, where they found bullet casings. They learned that the shooting victim drove himself to Carle Foundation Hospital's emergency room.

A check of the vehicle revealed that shots had been fired inside it. The victim has what police are describing as non-life-threatening injuries to his arm and head.

Because he's being treated, detectives have been unable to speak with him.

Police said they believe this is an isolated incident and there is no risk to the public. They said a woman in dark clothing was seen leaving the area on foot.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with further information is encouraged to call the Urbana Police Department at 217-384-2320 or, if wishing to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477. Anonymous tips may also be submitted online at 373tips.com or via the free "P3 Tips" mobile app.

And how do you know it wasn't self defense?

The shooter fled the scene of the shooting and did not contact the police. That's not consistent with self-defense.
