Opponents asking authorities to stop 'Paint the Hall Chief'

CHAMPAIGN — Opponents of Chief Illiniwek are calling on state and federal authorities to stop a planned "Paint the Hall Chief" event Thursday night in Champaign.

A letter signed by 16 people — activists, several Native Americans and professors affiliated with the Campus Faculty Association, among others — said the event violates state and federal anti-discrimination statutes, including the U.S. Civil Rights Act and the Illinois Human Rights Act.

Event organizers have asked Illini fans to wear Chief shirts or other apparel to the game to show support for the former UI symbol. Anti-Chief activists, who consider it a racist mascot, also plan to be on hand, though both sides have pledged to remain peaceful.

The letter said the "behaviors to be engaged in at this event result in racial discrimination directed at Native Americans and their denial of equal opportunity to education and full enjoyment of public facilities that are protected by law."

The letter goes on to allege that the "discriminatory behaviors" could include "a performance by Chief Illiniwek, the university band playing music designed to be 'Indian' to juice up the crowd to yell 'CHIEEEEEEF,' and displays of the university's trademarked Illiniwek logo by the official university cheering section, the Orange Krush."

The behaviors are illegal and therefore not protected by First Amendment rights, the letter argues.

The letter, marked "Crime alert," was sent to Gov. Bruce Rauner and to local, state and federal law-enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Department of Justice and FBI, according to UI Emeritus Professor Stephen Kaufman, one of those signatories. It asks for immediate action to prevent "serious confrontation" at the event.

UI spokeswoman Robin Kaler said Tuesday she had not yet seen the letter and declined to comment.

Patrick Wade, spokesman for the UI Police Department, also had not seen the letter but said police are working closely with State Farm Center on a security plan for Thursday night's game, as they do for all games.

"We deal with demonstrations like this all the time," he said. "I think this one's a little different in that it'll be occurring during a basketball game."

The department has talked with organizers of the Chief protests, as it tries to do with any demonstration, "mainly to figure out what their goals are," he said.

"The police department has a public duty to facilitate everyone's First Amendment rights," he said. "We're working with the State Farm Center ... to make sure it's a safe environment for everyone who is attending."

Wade said he wasn't sure if the "Paint the Hall Chief" event organizers had contacted police about their plans. The event was promoted on Facebook by the Honor the Chief Society and Students for Chief Illiniwek, but members said that while they support it, they are not sponsoring it. They said it arose out of a community discussion on Facebook.

Kaufman also sent a letter to the Big Ten Conference officials on Sunday, urging them not to broadcast the game and to withhold any payments to the UI from the broadcast.

The wearing of Native American imagery by members of the Orange Krush and other fans and the band's music "make it impossible for the Big Ten Network to broadcast this basketball game free of abusive and denigrating imagery directed at Native Americans," the letter said.

"It asks for immediate action to prevent "serious confrontation" at the event."   Will it be like the confrontation at the Home Coming Parade?

Who started that one?   It wasn't the pro Chief people!

It continues to amaze me how unaware the anti-Chief group is on this matter.  The more they try to stop every iota of the Chief history, imagery, etc. the more they rile up the pro-Chief side.  Remember folks all of this came about because a university employee, a professor, followed a student into a restroom with a video camera. He was detained by authorities (as he should have been), not charged (but should have been) and all under the guise of being a journalist.  Well anit-Chief folks, you stirred the pot and this is what you get.  Seems to me this was their plan all along.  The rights of the anti are greater than the pro.  Sorry, in America it doesn't work that we.  Time to agree to disagree and move on.

You are so sure that none of the people you named are African-American or American Indian/native American or any other ethnicity that you might be able to use in the mindless, but reflexive, charge that you and your ilk inevitably resort to: "you disagree with me; therefore, you are a racist...hate-filled...bigot....advocate of lynching....segregationist.....Jim Crow promoter...." etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum. Sickening and irrational, a bad combination; throw in dictatorial and authoritarian and you will find yourself right at home with that cohort. Pick up your camera and head for the water closet; there might be photo opps. there, Cough-man and Co. Your career obsession will drive you there, stat.

There's little that's more pathetic than the way reactionaries whine and cry and stamp their feet and toss yet another tantrum whenever anyone accurately describes, let alone criticizes, actual racism and bigotry...

We're not calling racists racist simply because we disagree with their disgusting racism.

We're not calling bigots bigoted simply because we disagree with their disgusting bigotry.

Though we certainly disagree with their disgusting racism and bigotry, we're calling them racists and bigots because, y'know, they're actual racist and bigots...

If you cling to the moldy old racist defunct ex mascot, then don't whine and cry when others point out that you're clinging to an offensive and racist stereotype.

If you don't like being accurately described as a supporter of a racist old ex mascot, then maybe don't support the racist old ex mascot...

...but if you insist on still supporting the racist old ex mascot, don't whine when people accurately describe what you insist on supporting as racist...

I grew up with the Chief, thus I like the Chief, but I've been sympathetic to the *portion* of Native Americans who've said that the Chief is offensive.  But more and more over the years their tactics and continued demands have pushed me to not care about their point of view, and this really pushes me away entirely from having any sympathy for their movement whatsoever.  Chief all the way!  For the first time in years I want to go to an Illinois basketball game, I think I will now.

And to the leftists who will surely reply to this trying to shame me, insult me, dismiss me, etc.  I say: "Meh.  Suck a rotten egg."

Illiniwek66 wrote on February 21, 2018 at 11:02 am

Let's be just a little reasonable here.  I haven't seen the letter, but based on this article, the letter sounds full of lies.

it's not "illegal" to wear a shirt with an illiniwek logo on it.  Why are they sold if it's illegal to wear it?  You can wear all kinds of offensive stuff if you want and are dumb enough to do it.

The chief has not performed at any official university function since he was retired.  A guy wearing a costume to a game does not constitute a performance.

The music played at halftime predates the chief.  While people like the professor may want to control what people say or think, the music was created prior to the chief, and should be left alone.

It's highly, highly doubtful the Krush will be wearing chief shirts, unless it's under their krush shirts.  I imagine the university will control that pretty well.

The protest is fine, if your goal is to intimidate familes with the children as they enter the hall.  The same group did their best to ruin the homecoming parade for families last October and were fairly successful.  Mob action like that, while probably illegal in my mind, was effective.  Inflicting your views on others seems kind of counterintuitive for a group that claims to be working to eradicate racism.

A couple of years ago I was on the Navajo reservation and was talking to a teenage Navajo.  He was wearing a Blackhawks t-shirt and I asked him if he was a fan.  His reply was that he was not, he just liked the fact that the shirt had an Indian face on it.  If only he knew what a racist he was...

Protestors, exercise your rights to protest all you want.  It's guaranteed in the constitution (which I might suggest you read).  Just think about how your actions might affect others, especially others that don't have a dog in this hunt.

NotYouAgain wrote on February 21, 2018 at 1:02 pm

I was talking with a Navajo who selling assorted Navajo handicrafts, and after our transaction, I asked him about the Washington Redskins ball cap he was wearing. He said that he was an NFL fan and he felt that the Redskins represented him, as no other NFL team did.

It was not the answer that one might expect if you listen to a chubby 50-year old adjunct professor, a retired professor and a college student who displays the maturity of a manipulative 15-year old girl trying to get her way from permissive parents. Let's hopes the university acts with firmness and doesn't change the University of Illinois into another Mizzou.

Are there any "pro-Chief" petitions being circulated? Is Kaufman crazed? Are there other garments with logos that Kaufman and his fellow petitioners find objectionable? Music to be played within range of their hearing that they cannot tolerate and thus must be banned? Should all "Indian head" coins be turned in to Kaufman for proper destruction so that he doesn't inadvertently encounter one while shopping somewhere? How does Kaufman find time to ?teach? Do research? What does he do at UIUC, besides his dedicated anti-Chief "work?" Will he and his petitioners be stationed inside all public restrooms with cameras? Apparently it isn't a crime in Champaign County to film people in public restrooms without their permission as long as your reason is that you don't like their garb and their attitude and they don't agree with your edicts about what they should wear, think, hear, see. The only one(s) fomenting this nonsense are those who have made a career out of it, literally. If Kaufman and his acolytes are successful at fomenting violence, they can then claim that the "Chief" displays by people attending Illinois games promote violence and create a dangerous atmosphere and thus achieve their aim: banning certain clothing or imagery worn by private citizens to a sporting event. Will that extend to the painting of "war paint" on the faces? Other Big Ten fans in stands were seen doing the "chopping" gesture at recent games, and it was not an Illinois game: Off with their heads? Expulsion? Kaufman cannot just let people ignore those who perpetuate the "Chief" images, those who know that eventually it will just dissipate with time, whether they like it or not. He cannot. A person obsessed and crazed cannot let others find their own path, have their own journey; he MUST dictate to them and they WILL do things his way. He has PETITIONS! The man needs help and needs to be advised to find meaningful outlets for his aggression and anger and uncontrolled need to control others.

Stephen Kaufman offends me ...

Hypocrisy offends me.

Kaufman admonishes the University of Illinois to abide by NCAA rules concerning Chief Illiniwek. This is the same Stephen Kaufman who, in violation of UI policy and NCAA rules, contacted prospective Illini recruits to discourage them from attending the UI because of the Chief. He exploits rules he favors, but ignores rules he doesn’t. This is hypocrisy pure and simple.

Hypocrisy (2).

"Crime alert!" Kaufman asks for immediate action to prevent "serious confrontation" at the event. This is the same Stephen Kaufman who incensed a mob of loud-mouthed anti-Chiefers to destroy the 2017 Homecoming Parade. The sad thing is he doesn’t seem to even realize he's talking out of bouth sides of his mouth.

Patently false representation and distortion offend me.

Kaufman claims the UI discriminates because “ … the university band playing music designed to be 'Indian' to juice up the crowd to yell 'CHIEEEEEEF,' … “ He conveniently forgets objective fact, steadfastly ignores objective fact, or is so arrogant to think he can create his own reality and others will believe him. The Three-in-One was composed independently of the Chief Illiniwek tradition. The UI Marching Band had a cheer "Rah-hoo-rah, Zip boom ah! Hip-zoo! rah-zoo! Jimmy, blow your bazoo! Ip* zidyiki . U. of I. Illinois!” Don’t be surprised if he attempts to spin this as a hostile and abusive racial slur.

Gross exaggeration and distortion to support a flawed agenda offend me.

Kaufman claims “the event violates state and federal anti-discrimination statutes, including the U.S. Civil Rights Act and the Illinois Human Rights Act.”  In his February 17 Letter to the Editor he states “Their failure to respond to these serious accusations by the Illinois Student Government and others results in continued abuse and hostility directed at Native Americans and their denial of state and federally protected civil rights." Really? This is hyperbole at its worst. I don’t recall hearing of any law enforcement or Court actions related to discrimination or human rights violation attributable to individuals wearing Chief logo apparel. If I’m mistaken, please cite such instances for me.

Bullying offends me.

In his February 17th letter Kaufman warns “Whereas all avenues within the university through which complaints of these violations can be directed have been unresponsive, the sole path to provide relief from violations of these civil rights appears to be through legal recourse.” So, sixteen people sign a letter, demand, threaten, and intimidate with “legal recourse” if they can’t bully thousands and thousands within the University of Illinois community. You might as well just give him your lunch money now. Bobby Knight couldn’t do any better.

Hypocrisy (3).

Kaufman complains about " … denial of equal opportunity to education and full enjoyment of public facilities that are protected by law." Yet, he has no reluctance to prevent the full enjoyment of public facilities protected by law to thousands and thousands of others who happen to hold different opinions than his.

And worst of all, exploitation of other totally unrelated tragedies to support a flawed agenda really offends me.

In his February 17th letter Kaufman warns “Disregard of analogous accusations of abuse at Michigan State and Penn State universities have proven disastrous for those institutions, and Illinois seems to be heading down that same path.”  With this preposterous statement he places exercising First Amendment rights on a par with the horrific sexual abuse that took place at PSU and MSU. He equates the victims' pain and suffering with his own aversion to a Chief t-shirt. How offensive is this to the PSU and MSU victims, real victims? His insensitivity is appalling. How pitiful to use those victims as pawns to promote his own delusions.  That's right Mr. Kaufman, it's all about you.  Only you.

Go missing?

One may be tempted to wish that Stephen Kaufman, Jay Rosenstein, et. al. “go missing.” The anti-Chief contingent within the UI (or formerly within the UI) saw nothing wrong in wishing certain people would “go missing.” However, I won’t. I’ll not wish any ill upon them personally. I just wish Kaufman and his fifteen cohorts would confront reality. Get over it. Move on. Go tilt at bigger windmills.

annabellissimo wrote on February 21, 2018 at 4:02 pm

Another "well said" and also a "hear, hear!"

Kaufman clearly derives something from this obsession that is unrelated to any reality-based consideration for American Indians or any kind of human rights considering that he/they got what they wanted, but it's still not enough - and yet the University of Illinois will bow to him again and again, I feel certain. My prediction is that he/they will create a chaotic, alarming situation that is ominous and portends violence, After creating it, they will use it to show that whatever features they object to are causing dangerous conditions and must be banned. The justifications for their positions are irrational, dishonest and authoritarian, but apparently the great intellects on campus cannot or will not argue against the loud, accusatory and self-righteous - maybe the great intellects have actual WORK to do - and the University bends.

What the pro-Chief people need to do is license and copyright or trademark (or whatever is the suitable application) imagery that has been created by and in conjunction with American Indian tribal leaders with proceeds going to the tribes involved and then, using the trademarked imagery and demonstrations, make themselves  available as half-time performers for a fee that gets paid to whatever tribes want to participate. Maybe have basketball shooting contests with a prize to the traditional, honored and dignified culture called "casinos."

I wonder if Kaufman can bear to watch any Olympics skating events that required the use of "Latin music" and "Latin dance" moves. Was "Latin" universal approval given? I don't think any of the ice-dancers were  "Latin" and none authorized to rhumba - on ice - in S. Korea! Oh, the horror! Some of them even fell down, thus demeaning "Latin" culture.

A few points:

No need to wear musky old Chief attire (though there's nothing wrong with that) as fresh new Chief attire is widely available online.

The majority of the crowd at the game tonight will be 25 or younger...just the next generation of Illiniwek supporters.

Anti-Chiefers continually say "you lost... Chief is never coming back...not gonna happen...no, no" as if repeating the mantra will make it true. It's been over a decade and the support for Illiniwek is still there.

Antics such as stopping a Homecoming parade, Rosenstein filming in a men's room and Kaufman writing ridiculous letters signed by a whopping 16 people make those of your ilk look petty and foolish.

If anything, support for reinstatement of the Chief has grown over the last several years.

Of course there are still going to be plenty of old racists hanging onto what their parents taught them. You are either lying or are ignorant if you tell me you think the average age of the old racist mascot supporter is anywhere under 55. I agree with you about the "something so silly" criticism, but it goes to you, Cough-man and your little band of angry careerists milking your contrived version of human rights, human compassion and equality. You and yours clearly believe in none of that in any meaningful way. You advance no one and nothing but yourselves and it is a disgusting display of narcissism that you bring out at every opportunity. "Look at me! Look at me! I am the saintly do-gooder speaking for all American Indians who cannot and will not speak for themselves and thus, it is up to ME to do it all and call out all the thousands of "non-native white people" who are wrong. Of course I have to make exception for those American Indians and African-Americans (and all other ethnicities who I also speak for) who do think and speak for themselves (without my imprimatur, it must be noted) and if they disagree with me, they can't be real Indians or really African-American, because I and only I am the designated determinor of all that is right and good and proper in all things Indian, black and all other ethnicities, too numerous to mention but I speak for you, too!. Yeah, it's a recent addendum but I also have decided that I speak for all African-Americans, too. I'm neither black nor Indian but I call all the rest of you who don't join my malevolent band of bullies "racists and bigots" and that proves that I am a saintly do-gooder and the rest of you are bad, evil - and did I mention you are musky (? - don't you mean 'musty' or are you referrring to large, toothy fish?) AND moldy?

The reason that I agree with you that it is "something so silly" is that "you" won - i.e. the faction that successfully removed "the Chief" imagery, etc from association with the University of Illinois, yet you continue to try to foment conflict and attempt to raise the authoritarian clamp-down on even the vestiges of freedom that are beyond the purview of Illinois authority. You are frustrated because you cannot control thoughts or manners of dress or opinions and fascists who cannot bend all to their will resort to greater and greater authoritarian methods, coupled with bullying and violence. Your Trump imagery shows that you revere that kind of m.o. and that might also help explain why you loathe people who advocate, not for racism and bigotry (as you keep trying to assert, so disingenuously and ignorantly), but for freedom of thought and choice and for legitimate democratic processes, as opposed to groupthink, Big Brother, Chinese Cultural Revolution, Nazi/fascist and all other examples of authoritarian efforts to control and quash freedom and independence.

What is not "so silly" is the snowballing loss of free-thinking, open-minded, rational, logical American intelligence and articulation. The high school students who have organized and are leading give one heart for the future. The kind of thinking you and your circle display do not.

Just in point of fact, which you would know if you actually paid any attention to Illinois sports, other than goading commenters here, is the fact that most of the Chief t-shirts and other garb worn by (still, as yet free) people attending said sporting events are young people, typical college-age appearances, in contrast to your effort to introduce yet another -ism, age-ism, with throwing in the "geriatric, whiney charge." It is likely that you either are Cough-man or are closely affiliated with him, and if so, the "geriatric, whiney" descriptor might pertain, but as to those most likely to wear "Chief" garb to games? Mostly young people, but go ahead and think of THEM as geriatric because maybe I'm wrong about you and maybe not only is your thinking small and poorly developed but so are you because you're very young and trollish and get juvenile kicks out of provoking others. Who knows. Who cares. And why do you do it when, as you say, you "won.' What exactly have you won?  I've no idea if their t-shirts are "20 year old musky (sic) moldy chief shirts" or not, but they themselves appear to be around 20 years old. Nothing you say serves your racist, bigoted, small and narrow-minded, age-ist, bullying, angry, smug, irrational and illogical, authoritarian, nasty schtick when compared to reality.

Now, if you would just go and emulate your hero Trump and go bully and grope elsewhere, it would suit you more than wasting what few gray cells you have available on trying to engage with people of superior intellect. But you won't; you can't. You will hit the keyboard again where the keys for the letters that spell "racist....bigot....moldy....mascot...." must be worn down to shiny illegibility by now.

Small mind, busy fingers, angry bully: ever thought of running for the Presidency, like the Trump likeness you use with your posts? You're new here in that regard, but not in content, and I have no idea who you posed as before, but your words are very familiar, just as mean-spirited, and meaningless.

It's half-time at the basketball game: shouldn't you be in the water closet with your camera?

I mean if they really mean it.

2) As a kid whom grew up in the C-U, I always thought the chief was cool.  For being in a state with an Indian name, I thought the whole Illini thing was neat considering it's the only trace of indians I see around here. That and indian beads. I thought the song was cool, too. I see both sides but we have bigger problems, really.

3) Jay Rosenberg should not be allowed to film, uninvited, in a restroom unpunished. Nobody else would be let off so easy.  I mean atleast make him stand on the corner of Neil and Green (Bradley and McKinnley), for a day, holding a sign that says he records people in bathrooms.  Pretty wierd, bro. With Professors Brendt and Jay, all the shootings on campus, and all the polar bear beatdowns by the Illini Union, baby killin', and kidnapping attempts/successes, I'd say this "crime alert" letter has the wrong content matter. Did they right a letter about these things too and I missed them? Did they write a letter about all these kids overdosing, getting shot up around town every week or two, or any other alert-worthy reasons? Just wondering.

Nobody read past your first two sentences. Your post isn't funny is soaked in arrogance. Good to know that you thought the fake dancing Indian in chicken feathers was cool. That totally makes it right.

Shameful. This thread and all who participate in "paint the hall chief" prove it's about getting in the face of "liberals" to show who's boss.

Who got in whos face at the homecoming prade? It wasn't the pro Chief people!

Look at the video of it, Kaufman going ballistic and loosing what mind he had left! This guy is unstable and should be treated like the anarchist he and his bunch are! I hope the U of I police will be there to keep the order and if either side needs to be taken to jail they do just that!

Man I bet you old white people were PISSED when segregation ended if you are getting this upset about not having your racist little chicken feather mascot run and jump around at halftime. I remember even as a kid at age 7 or 8 when my dad took me go games I would think to myself "This is so stupid, why are all these grown ups acting so strange and serious about this mascot?" Then I grew up and found out that just because you're an adult doesn't mean you're very bright, which helps me understand people like Tom Napier, Jim Dey and other local blowhards a lot better.

CommonSenseless wrote on February 22, 2018 at 8:02 am

Who says segregation has ended?  The Democrat party has just been manipulating the boundaries to keep you confused.  Have a look at this one...

Have a nice day.

I agree with you completely.  I respect your right to have an opposing opinion.

As wild as it seems, two or more people with differing opinions can also engage in a civil discourse without personal attacks, name calling, and inflamatory rhetoric.  This is a nuance you, and a couple others, miss.

It would be helpful to your credibility for you to exhibit similar respect to others with opposing opinions.

Pax Vobiscum.

Sorry Tom but as usual I'm going to have to turn down your advice. I save civil discourse for when it matters and when I'm speaking to someone who deserves it. You are not one of those people. Anyone who causes as much senseless division is not worth the effort to engage in any significant manner. I merely just like to inform readers who haven't read your garbage before and then move on.

annabellissimo wrote on February 22, 2018 at 7:02 pm

CallSaul, Moonpie, all those other angry "names" you use and probably are Cough-man or one of his crazed band, why not just save yourself some time and blood pressure meds. Since you are in fact the "emeritus" and "elders" here (missed out on the but-wiser part of that, didn't you), it is interesting that you are now calling people not only racists, bigots, but also - horror! - "old, geriatric, whiney...." now and we also have "non-native, white, whiney."

I must take issue with the "non-native" since it is a silly concept when all humans are "non-native" because our entire history is one of migration. The "native Americans" crossed the land-bridge of the (later named) Bering Straits from their previous locations. It is human history to migrate. There is no argument that modern "American Indians" have for the most part had very hard lives as displaced and oppressed people, just as have African-Americans and others. We can hope and work for changes in those conditions.

Clearly a very important and meaningful step towards improving the lives and lot of all displaced and oppressed people will be banning all imagery and all thinking and all references to "the Chief" at UIUC. Since "the Chief" has been banned for many years now, we should start seeing those improvements any day now. Maybe if you, CallSaul/Cough-man, et al. could spend less time here calling everybody else names, you would find some free time to go help those who are so yearning for your wise and good-hearted leadership. And if they find you just a "moldy, musky (sic) geriatric white whiner" who should take care of his own house, you won't call them "racist bigots" will you?

I'm not 'cough -man'...(but nice weird insistence on spelling his name that way...)

And after your garbage insult filled rants and screeds full of personal attacks you have the nerve to attack someone else for the tone of their comments...?

The self righteous sanctimony, lack of self awareness, arrogance and hypocrisy of you rightwingers never ceases to amaze...

Talk about taking care of your own house before attacking others yet again --- try practicing what you preach...

I thought conservative white Republicans such as you supporters of the banned former mascot were against handing out participation medals/trophies? What happened to that? Just like the treasonous Confederates lost the war and had to retire their racist, slave owning flag forever, the chief battle has also been lost. That means no monuments, statues, fight songs or silly mascots running and jumping around at half time. Sure, you can still wear your chief shirt to the game but you look just as stupid and foolish as someone with a big Confederate flag on their T-shirt. Just like on this forum, nobody will take you seriously in real life. Which is why you're on the internet clinging onto this stupid argument. I'd like to know how much time and effort you put into anything important besides a dead mascot.

CommonSenseless wrote on February 22, 2018 at 9:02 am

The "battle" as you call it, has never been fought. To continue your battle analogy with regard to the Chief issue, the defenders of the University would be Benedict Arnold and the Chief would be West Point.

Where do you find the In-Your-Guts  ... / SYF logo?  I'd love to have a t-shirt!

I've browsed the interweb and found the In-Your-Guts ... image and, of course, the SYF image, but never together as you've portrayed them.  You're not violating any copyright or tradeark laws are you, the upright lawbiding citizen you are?  Better not, 'cause you'll have the GD legal team will come down on you like the UI on student groups.

1) I am not sure that what someone does or does not wear to a ball game is within the purvue of the "authorities".

2) 16 signatures is laughable.

3) I do not care in the least about the chief, one way or the other.

4) I do not understand why any human being thinks they have the ability to determine the clothing choice of another human being.

5) It seems to me, that this would all be mitigated by a new masot.

scott_tapley wrote on February 22, 2018 at 4:02 pm

Dread Pirate, Because attacking white people just because they're white isn't racist at all to people like you who think merely disagreeing with any non-white people is racist, regardless of the motivation.

The totalitarian left wants to shut down free speech for everyone who doesn't agree with them, and UIUC's faculty is sadly saturated with adherents to the cult of leftism.

My son, who recently graduated from UIUC, says most of his classes were Marxist indoctrination sessions--a hugely disappointing waste of time and money.  Very sad that such a (once-)great institution has been so thoroughly poisoned from the inside.

CallSaul wrote on February 22, 2018 at 4:02 pm

This is a typically bad faith regurgitation of rightwing lies and delusions...

Who on here or anywhere has been 'attacking white people just because they're white' and then claiming doing so 'isn't racist at all' because they 'think merely disagreeing with any non-white people is racist, regardless of the motivation'?

Be specific...

Seriously...show a quote backing up this pathetic lie...

You rightwing reactionary snowflakes melt into a quivering puddle of goo whenever anyone dares to disagree with you and point out your racism and bigotry.

And then if anyone has the gall to criticize --- or even acknowledge the mere existence of --- your racism and bigotry, you whine and cry that calling out your racism and bigotry is orders of magnitude worse than your actual racism and bigotry.

And then you ridiculously scream that most Illinois classes are 'Marxist indoctrination sessions'...?

Wow...you have well and truly gone around around many many bends.

There is simply no way to compromise with this degree of deliberate and enthusiastic bat guano lunacy and stubborn insistance on the wholesale rejection of basic facts and reality...

What's sad is that your kid went to the U of I for 4 years and it took both of you until he graduated to draw such a conclusion that could have been avoided 4 years earlier by going to any other school in the world in which you guys didn't feel so triggered by the libtards. Maybe another school could have provided little Scottie Jr. with a safe space where only Fox News was played and white people were comfortable sharing their distrust of minorities.

In the words of Tom Napier, "...confront reality. Get over it. Move on. Go tilt at bigger windmills." The Chief has been removed from its official role and will not be returning in that capacity.

The First Amendment protects the rights of those who continue to display the image or chant "Chief" but this will not return that image to its former status.

Claims by Chief supporters that removal of this symbol would have a negative effect on fundraising have not been supported by facts. Since the Chief's removal in 2007 the University of Illinois has exceeded its fundraising goals in two successive campaigns and raised more than $2.5 billion.
