United Way moving to Savoy after selling office to Green Street Realty

SAVOY — The United Way of Champaign County is moving its offices from Champaign to Savoy and has secured a big donation from the owner of the business that is buying its current offices.

United Way board Chairwoman Beth Auterman announced that the organization accepted an offer from Green Street Realty to buy the current headquarters at 404 W. Church St., C. In addition to the purchase price, Green Street Realty owner Chris Saunders pledged to contribute "a significant gift" over the next two years.

United Way will move to the building at 5 Dunlap Court, Savoy, in mid-May. Auterman said it will buy the building outright with the proceeds from the sale of the current building. Below is a map of the move:

"We've been in our Church Street location since 1993, and while it's been a wonderful home, even good homes age," Auterman said Thursday. "We looked at the required maintenance over the next few years, and it became clear that this offer would be the most fiscally responsible choice for us to pursue. We'd much rather be investing our donors' contributions into our community than our office building."

If the United Way had stayed at the current office, it would have cost the organization about $243,000 to replace the elevator to be in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, add a new roof, rebuild the parking lot and retaining walls and complete extensive repair work on the portico columns.
