Champaign Surplus moving down Neil, becoming Champaign Outdoors

CHAMPAIGN — Champaign Surplus is moving down the road a bit and changing its name.

Champaign Outdoors, as it will be known, plans to move next to Ace Hardware in the Carriage Center development on South Neil Street near the end of May and will drop its surplus products.

"Particularly over the last 10 years, it became difficult to source true military surplus," co-owner Dan Epstein said. "Between the military getting more efficient at producing and old surplus running out, we weren't able to get what customers wanted."

The company's online store, Rugged Outdoors, will also open its first physical store next door. While Champaign Outdoors will sell more of the latest gear, Rugged will focus on the basics and clearance deals, Epstein said.

The company is also moving its headquarters to the Titan Warehouses at 101 E. Mercury Drive on the north end of Champaign, where employees will handle customer service, product inflow and other internet-related jobs.

In January, the company announced it would move from its longtime downtown home at 303 S. Neil, and hold an "end of an era" liquidation sale, which wraps up Sunday.
