Student found with stun gun at Jefferson Middle School

CHAMPAIGN — Police located a stun gun Friday afternoon that a student was carrying at Jefferson Middle School.

After a concerned student reported it to their mother, the mother called police, who arrived within minutes at the school shortly after 12:30 p.m. and identified the student with the stun gun, spokeswoman LaEisha Meaderds said.

Because of the immediate response, the school wasn't placed on lockdown.

"This wasn't a situation where the student was using the weapon in any type of threatening way toward other students, but they had a weapon in their possession," Meaderds said.

Police interviewed the student, but Meaderds said she hasn't received any updates on why the student had a stun gun at school.

In a statement, Champaign school district spokeswoman Emily Schmit said the district is "taking this very seriously and will address the matter in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct."
