Firefighters rescue dog from Champaign house while putting out flames in garage

CHAMPAIGN — Firefighters rescued a dog as they fought a garage fire Monday afternoon a house in a neighborhood near Centennial High School.

According to Deputy Fire Marshal Randy Smith, firefighters were called to a home at 908 Frank Drive at 2:48 p.m. Monday after a passer-by noticed smoke coming from the attached garage.

When firefighters arrived, they saw smoke coming from the garage and immediately deployed hoses into the home to extinguish the flames.

While the occupants were not home at the time, firefighters found a dog in the house and rescued it.

No injuries were reported.

Smith said the fire was under control by 3:01 p.m. He estimated total damage to the home at $7,500.

Smith said investigators remained at the scene Monday evening to try to determine the cause of the blaze.

"The four occupants of the home have been displaced because of this fire," Smith said.
