CHAMPAIGN — This is supposed to be the week that Champaign-Urbana has its last spring freeze; the average date of the last 32-degree temperature locally coming on April 13 (Friday).

Instead it might be the week of the last snowfall — or not — after another late-season burst of snow dropped close to an inch on the area late Sunday and early Monday.

And April 9 may not be the date of the last snowfall of 2018.

There's a chance of another little wave of snow next Sunday morning, meteorologist Heather Stanley of the National Weather Service office in Lincoln reluctantly admitted Monday.

"I can't make a comment that it's the last one," Stanley said. "At this point there's a chance for precipitation Sunday. There's a chance we could see snow with it.

"But that's seven days out. I can't say there's not a chance because there is especially early in the morning but if it does happen it shouldn't accumulate a lot. It shouldn't, but keep in mind that a day seven forecast is going to change moving forward."

Officially Champaign-Urbana has received 4.8 inches of snow in this month, said Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel, tying it for fourth place among all Aprils in local weather history. Only April 1920 (8 inches), April 1982 (6.6 inches) and April 1940 (5.2 inches) had more.

Of course there are still 20 days to add to the snow total, and the weather service's Climate Prediction Center shows good chances of below average temperatures and above average precipitation out until at least April 22.

"That is what we're seeing but cooler than normal could mean just 50s, as our maximum temperature should be around 60 at this time of the year," said Stanley. "I am trying my best to be an optimist but mother nature is not cooperating with my optimism."

The weather is stuck in a pattern of flow from the northwest instead of the southwest, she said.

"We don't see an extended period of warmth yet," she said.

According to Illinois State Water Survey data the last 32-degree freeze occurs, on average, in Champaign-Urbana on April 13 and in Danville and Rantoul on April 22.

But Monday morning, April 16, could be below freezing, she noted.

"Enjoy those 70s on Thursday and Friday," she advised.

The forecast for Champaign-Urbana shows a high of 62 degrees on Wednesday, followed by 72 degrees Thursday and Friday before settling back to highs of 57 Saturday and 47 on Sunday.

The last 70-degree reading in Champaign-Urbana was on Nov. 5.

By this time last year Champaign-Urbana had had eight days of 70 degrees or more. The latest snowfall increased the seasonal total to 18.9 inches, still below the yearly average of 23.2 inches.
