Danville police investigating string of armed robberies at businesses

DANVILLE — Police are investigating the latest in a string of robberies, including two at the same East Main Street business, that occurred a few weeks apart.

Around 8:48 p.m. Thursday, police responded to the Family Dollar store at 1228 E. Main St. for a report of an attempted armed robbery.

An employee told police that two men armed with handguns who were wearing dark hoodies pulled over their heads and had their faces covered — one by a ski mask and the other a bandanna — entered the store, looked around, then quickly left without speaking to anyone. No injuries were reported during the incident.

The same store was robbed at 8:28 p.m. March 25 when two men armed with handguns and wearing dark clothes and masks entered, demanded money from the register and fled with an undisclosed amount.

And on Sunday, a similar incident occurred at a different business, the Tee Nails salon at 2175 N. Vermilion St.

Employees told police that about 4 p.m. that day, two men armed with handguns came and wearing dark clothing with hoodies pulled over their heads and masks covering their faces entered the business. One walked around while the other approached the counter, but after briefly looking around, both quickly left without taking anything.

Police are also investigating two other recent incidents:

— Around 5:25 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to a reported robbery at Walmart, 4101 N. Vermilion St, where an employee said she was working the money-services area when a man approached and handed her a note demanding money from the register. He took an undisclosed amount from the drawer, left the store and got into a black vehicle. She said he was wearing a black hoodie and dark jean. There was no weapon displayed, and no injuries were reported.

— At 12:03 a.m. Wednesday, officers responded to an armed robbery at the Circle K gas station at 610 S. Bowman Ave., where an employee said three men armed with handguns and wearing masks and dark clothing with hoods pulled over their heads entered the store and demanded money from the register. They men took an undisclosed amount and ran away to the west. No one was injured.

Danville police did not return calls Friday asking whether they think any of the incidents are related, but Cmdr. Josh Webb said in a news release that they don't believe the two incidents that occurred Thursday at Walmart and Family Dollar are related.

Anyone with any information about these crimes is asked to call Danville police at 217-431-2250 or, if wishing to remain anonymous, Vermilion County Crime Stoppers at 217-446-8744.
