Former Illini national champion wrestler faces DUI charges

CHAMPAIGN — A former two-time national champion wrestler at the University of Illinois is facing DUI charges after police said he was found passed-out drunk in a vehicle last week.

Champaign police Sgt. Tom Frost said around 3:40 a.m. Thursday, police got a call to check on the welfare of a man at the Circle K at 1301 S. Neil St., C. When they arrived, they found Jesse Delgado, 25, of Champaign asleep behind the wheel of his car, which was running.

After being awakened, Delgado told officers he had been out drinking the previous night. Officers issued him two tickets for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Several hours later, according to Urbana police Lt. Rich Surles, Delgado was caught trying to break into a vehicle. However, prosecutors are not charging Delgado in that incident.

Delgado wrestled for the UI from 2011 to 2015.
