Ousted sanitary district board president to serve until replacement named

URBANA — The head of the Urbana-Champaign Sanitary District said Friday that although the district board's president was not reappointed Thursday night by the Champaign County Board, he can still serve until a replacement is named.

Executive Director Rick Manner said that while board President Jerry Lyke's term runs only through the end of May, he won't leave until he's replaced.

Multiple county board members said Thursday that they voted against Lyke's reappointment because of his unwillingness to discuss lowering the salaries of sanitary district board members.

Manner said even if the sanitary district board is reduced from three members to two, the board would still be able to operate because it would still have a quorum.

The next meeting for the district's board will be June 7, when a president and vice president are supposed to be named.

Meanwhile, the county board said applications will be accepted for the vacant sanitary district board post through June 22.

A selection is expected to be made at the county board's July meeting.
