CHAMPAIGN — The wait for Krekel's ends Saturday.

And yes, the chicken car will be in attendance for the big day.

The popular burger-and-custard joint's Champaign location plans to open at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, said manager Stephanie Stinson.

Located in the old Vinny's East Coast Pizzeria building on Kirby Avenue and next door to fellow custard-seller Jarling's, this will be the ninth Krekel's location in central Illinois.

"Everybody in the community has been so helpful," Stinson said. "I can't thank the community enough. They've all stopped by and given us so much support."

The restaurant will stay open as late as necessary to satisfy those hoping to try it out, Stinson said.

She added that most of the staff has been brought over from the Mount Zion location to help with the grand opening.

Taylor James, daughter-in-law of owner Troy Teel, told The News-Gazette in April that they chose to expand to Champaign because it's a "lively city": "There's more going on, with sports and all that."
