Top of the Morning, June 14, 2018

This week's Vet Fest 2018 is a culmination of three years' worth of planning by Rantoul's JERRY WIESE.

"It has consumed me," the Vietnam War veteran said. "But it's been a labor of love. Now, it's showtime."

The first Vet Fest runs from 9 a.m. today through Sunday night on the property of Mid-America Motorworks on U.S. 45 north of Effingham. It features vendors, performers and exhibitions. The intent: bring together men and women who served in every branch of the military "to experience the bond and the brotherhood or sisterhood that most of us felt when we were in uniform."

Wiese, 66, a U.S. Army combat medic who worked at Kraft in Champaign until retiring in 2007, said, "It wouldn't surprise me if we get 10,000 people easily. Something compelled me to go forward with this. We had to jump through some hoops, but it all worked out."
