Former St. Joseph employee accused of theft

URBANA — A former St. Joseph employee has been charged with stealing from the village over a period of years.

Laura E. Boyd, 30, who listed an address in the 2200 block of Heather Hills Drive, St. Joseph, was charged Friday with theft between $10,000 and $100,000.

She was arrested at her home Sunday evening on a warrant that had been issued Friday and is being held in lieu of $10,000 bond. She is expected to be arraigned today.

Champaign County sheriff's Lt. Curt Apperson said Boyd was employed by the village in 2010, and one of her responsibilities was to collect sewer payments.

In October 2017, Apperson said, village officials noticed that cash payments for those bills were apparently not being deposited into the bank. Their investigation focused on Boyd, who had access to the computer records, which showed accounts were paid in full.

She was fired that month.

After her firing, sheriff's deputies began investigating and found that between 2011 and 2017, approximately $77,600 could not be accounted for. Boyd denied any wrongdoing, Apperson said.

Apperson said it took the deputies several months to make their way through the years of financial records and to resolve other questions that the state's attorney had before bringing charges.
