Champaign man charged in weekend assault in Campustown

URBANA — A Champaign man was charged Wednesday with aggravated battery in the beating of a man over the weekend in Campustown.

A release from Champaign police said Carlos Draine, 25, of the 200 block of West William Street was arrested Tuesday in north Champaign in connection with a Sunday attack on a 20-year-old man.

Police were called to Second and Green streets shortly after 2 a.m. over a fight and found the young man unconscious with serious injuries.

He was taken to an area hospital and has since been released.

Police said their investigation revealed that the alleged beating started as a verbal argument between Draine and the victim. Video shows Draine’s physical assault against that man, as well as Draine allegedly hitting others who were nearby but not involved with the fight.

Champaign police are asking others who may have been hit or injured during the altercation to file a report with them.

Draine was charged with two counts of aggravated battery and pleaded not guilty Wednesday afternoon. Judge John Kennedy set his bond at $15,000 and told him to be back in court Aug. 28.
