Community Coalition unveils 5 action plans to combat gun violence

CHAMPAIGN — Local officials unveiled five community action plans Wednesday as ways to tackle a recent spike in gun violence.

The plans, presented at the Community Coalition's monthly gathering, came out of input from a meeting on June 29, following back-to-back Fridays with two shootings in Champaign.

The plans, to stretch over the next few months, were announced by Champaign Community Relations Manager Tracy Parsons:

-- Taking inventory of and evaluating resources Champaign and Urbana already have to fight gun violence.

-- Providing more effective marketing and distribution of information for trauma-informed care. "We've got some fantastic trainings that are free and not attended enough," Parsons said.

-- Creating a public policy agenda to get local funding, grassroots organizing and other assets.

-- Using marketing and communication resources to distribute stories detailing the impact of gun violence.

-- Putting together a committee to write grants, coordinate resources and build community capacity.
