UPDATE: Alcohol involved in crash that killed Mahomet man

MAHOMET — Champaign County sheriff's deputies are investigating an apparently alcohol-related  crash early Saturday that claimed the life of a Mahomet man.

A release from Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said that Michael P. Donahue, 32, died at the scene of the single-vehicle crash on County Road 350 E at the intersection with 2500 N, about 2 miles north of Mahomet and just west of Illinois 47.

Sheriff’s Lt. Brian Mennenga said Mr. Donahue was a passenger in a car headed west on 2500 N.

The driver, Chad Smith, 27, of Mahomet, lost control, left the road and rolled at least once before coming to rest in a bean field on the south side of the road.

Smith was ticketed for driving under the influence of alcohol.

He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Carle Hospital for treatment, Mennenga said.

The accident happened about 2:45 a.m. An autopsy was to be performed Saturday.
