Wedding bandit comes clean

CHAMPAIGN — A guest at a wedding reception at a Champaign hotel over the weekend has been told to come to court next month after he admitted stealing money from the married couple's cards.

University of Illinois police spokesman Pat Wade said the 61-year-old man came to the police department Monday to talk about what happened at the I Hotel and Conference Center, 1900 S. First St., C, on Saturday.

When he came in, he brought with him $220 he had allegedly taken from envelopes addressed to the couple.

Wade said a couple of guests at the reception saw the man, also an invited guest, with open envelopes and informed the newly wedded couple of what they had seen.

The following day the newlyweds called the man's wife and told her what the other guests had reported to them. They also contacted UI police.

Police then called the man to come in for an interview. He came Monday and brought the couple's stolen money with him, Wade said.

At the conclusion of the interview, rather than arresting him, police issued him a notice to appear in court Aug. 14.

The state's attorney's office will decide between now and then if the man will be charged with a crime.
