UI trustees ready to kick off a full day of meetings

University of Illinois trustees have a full day of meetings at the Illini Union today, starting at 8:30 a.m. with three committee meetings. The regular business meeting at 12:30 p.m. starts with a closed session, followed by the public portion at 2 p.m. Highlighting the action is a proposed merger between the UI Chicago and the John Marshall Law School, a private school in Chicago's South Loop. Also on the agenda:

Approval of designs for the $14 million Illini soccer-track complex on St. Mary's Road and the naming of Demirjian Park Stadium for the donors. It will feature grass soccer fields, a refurbished track and a 21,000-square-foot building in between with spectator stands on both sides, locker rooms and a hall of fame space for each sport, a recruitment lounge, restrooms and concession stands.

Raising the dollar limit for legal or insurance settlements that require trustee approval to $1 million, from $250,000, to improve efficiency and account for inflation, officials said. The board will receive a periodic report about all settlements between $250,000 and $1 million. The settlements cover workers'-compensation and liability claims.

Approval of Avijit Ghosh as vice president and chief financial officer for the UI system at an annual salary of $413,000. Ghosh has held the job on an interim basis and is a former business dean, vice president for technology and economic development and CEO of the UI Hospital.
