Danville man gets 24 years for shooting man in stomach

DANVILLE — A 35-year-old Danville man was sentenced to 24 years in prison Friday for shooting a man in the abdomen last summer.

Deontae L. Franklin was convicted of one count of aggravated battery with firearm June 15 at the conclusion of a two-day jury trial.

Circuit Judge Nancy Fahey sentenced Franklin for the Class X felony. He must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence, according to State's Attorney Jacqueline Lacy.

The shooting occurred sometime before 7 a.m. July 29, 2017, in the 1200 block of Clarence Street in Danville. When police arrived, they found Bobby Hansbrough, 43, of Danville, with a gunshot wound in his midsection. Hansbrough identified Franklin as the shooter.

Three days later, police arrested Franklin in the same block and recovered the weapon.
