UPDATE: Authorities say motorist killed by train after driving around gates

UPDATE, 7:50 p.m.:

DANVILLE — A motorist who authorities said drove around railroad-crossing gates died Friday afternoon when their car was hit by a freight train at a crossing in the north end of the city.

Vermilion County Sheriff’s Department officials said the crash happened about 2 p.m. at the West Newell Road crossing, near Menards and Walmart.

The driver, whose name has not yet been released, was westbound on Newell and drove “around the crossing gates and onto the railroad tracks, where it was struck by a southbound freight train,” according to Sheriff’s Capt. Michael Hartshorn, the department’s chief investigator.

The driver, who was the only person in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene, Hartshorn said.

“The warning lights at the crossing were flashing, the gates were down, and multiple witnesses heard the train sounding its horn,” Hartshorn said.

Vermilion County sheriff’s deputies and Bismarck ambulance and fire crews were at the scene.
