Attempt to steal rental car nets probation

URBANA — A Champaign man who admitted he tried to steal a rental car about a year ago has been sentenced to two years of probation.

Terrence Ware, 29, who last lived in the 1800 block of Valley Road, pleaded guilty Thursday before Judge Heidi Ladd to attempted possession of a stolen vehicle.

Assistant State's Attorney Sarah Perry said on Sept. 6, Ware got in a Dodge Charger at Enterprise Rent-A-Car, 1804 S. Neil St., C. When the manager approached to see what he was doing, Ware produced a utility knife and demanded the keys to the car, Perry said.

The manager called police, who found Ware still in the car when they arrived.

Ware had been unfit to stand trial on the initial charge against him — attempted armed robbery — between late September of last year and May 17.

The more serious charge was dismissed in exchange for Ware's plea. Perry said Ware's only prior conviction was for misdemeanor criminal trespass to vehicle in 2014.
