Parkland plans convocation Aug. 23 ahead of start of fall semester

CHAMPAIGN — To kick off the new academic year, Parkland College is inviting all new and returning students for an informal introduction to their new school.

Starting at 11 a.m. Au. 23, students can sign up for clubs, tie-dye T-shirts at an art table and eat for free, all while listening to music from the college's student-run radio station, WPCD-FM.

There's also a new feature this year: a "Guitar Hero" challenge. Participants will get to play the video game against Parkland College President Tom Ramage.

The convocation is an effort by the university to increase retention and graduation rates, and is part of Parkland's First Year Experience initiative. The college wants to make it the first milestone toward a degree.
