UPDATE: Westbound I-74 cleared after 2 crashes east of Urbana

URBANA — Two crashes within 20 minutes of each other near a construction zone left westbound Interstate 74 backed up for miles Friday morning between Urbana and St. Joseph.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Mark Holley reported that the first crash, involving a car and a semi, happened at 11:21 a.m. at milepost 185.5, just east of the University Avenue exit in Urbana, blocking both westbound lanes.

After that scene had been cleared, a second crash was reported at 11:38 a.m. about 4 miles to the east, in a construction zone at milepost 189, blocking off the single open lane of traffic there. State police set up a loop in the construction zone until that scene was cleared at 12:23 p.m., and traffic was backed up significantly during that time.

Holley cautioned drivers to slow down and be aware of slowing traffic near construction zones and warned motorists not to stop to take photos or videos of crash scenes while driving.
