Man accused of stealing money from newlyweds' cards charged with felony

URBANA — A DeWitt man accused of stealing a couple hundred dollars out of cards at a couple's wedding reception has been charged with felony theft.

Paul W. Devine, 61, was charged Monday with felony theft with a prior theft. Judge John Kennedy set his bond at $1,000; he is due back in court Oct. 9.

According to a University of Illinois police report, other guests at the reception at the I Hotel and Conference Center in Champaign allegedly saw Devine with some open envelopes that were addressed to the couple and told the newlyweds about it.

The next day, the newlyweds called Devine's wife and told her what the guests had seen, and reported the thefts to UI police.

Officers then called Devine to the police department for an interview, and he allegedly showed up with couple's stolen money, reportedly $220.
